Gut feelings: how genes, microbes and the brain interact

A CUHK study has identified early-life links between the epigenome, gut microbiome and neurodevelopment. By following children from birth, the research team found that patterns in DNA methylation and gut microbial development were associated with later autism and ADHD-related scores, highlighting a possible route for early-life risk assessment and intervention.

Finding the Guts to Fight off COVID-19

A university research team has found that lower levels of “good” bacteria and higher levels of “bad” bacteria in the gut of people with COVID-19 has made it harder for them to fight off the virus. The team has since developed a probiotic supplement based on this research to enhance the “good” bacteria thereby offering hope to boosting immunity against the virus in everyone who could be at risk.
