To celebrate its 60th anniversary, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is partnering with Times Higher Education (THE) to host the THE Asia Universities Summit on 21-23 June 2023. The three-day Summit is themed “The Asian University in 2050”.
Asian institutions now constitute a third of the THE World University Rankings, a figure that has increased from a quarter over the past five years. The development and future of Asian universities will be the focus of this year’s summit. Each day has a different agenda: “Partnerships and alliances” on the first day, “Research strategies and emerging megatrends” on day two and “Internationalisation and the student experience” on day three.
Speakers include presidents, vice-presidents and university leaders from top universities in nations and regions including mainland China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, India, Pakistan, the Middle East and Oceania. The University of Auckland’s Vice-chancellor Dawn Freshwater will offer insights about the importance of partnerships. Harvard University’s Professor of China Studies William Kirby will discuss his thoughts on the megatrends driving US-China relations until 2050.
CUHK Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Rocky S. Tuan will open the summit and speak at a range of sessions. “We are thrilled to be hosting the THE Asia Universities Summit in CUHK’s 60th anniversary year. CUHK was established with a unique mission to connect China and the world, and pioneered the introduction of collegiate education in Asia. This means we are exceptionally placed as an ideal platform to facilitate a discussion about the future of higher education in our region.” Professor Tuan continued, “The summit will be an exciting opportunity for the world’s university leaders to reconnect with Hong Kong and engage directly in one of the world’s most dynamic and exciting regions in science, technology and education.”
THE’s Chief Global Affairs Officer Phil Baty remarked, “The phenomenal rise of dynamic and innovative Asian universities up the world university rankings has been epitomised by universities like CUHK – which has surged up from outside the world top 150 into a top-50 position in just a decade – and East Asian institutions across mainland China, Hong Kong, South Korea and Singapore. This summit, Times Higher Education’s first event in Hong Kong since 2019, presents a vital opportunity for senior university leaders across the continent to meet face-to-face, to collaborate to harness the exciting innovation in the sector and to ensure continued success amid great global uncertainty. We’ll be asking what the Asian university will look like in 2050, in the face of digital transformation, the rise of Artificial Intelligence, inequalities across the diverse continent and increased geopolitical challenges… I’d like to thank CUHK for hosting these vital conversations.”
It will also feature the live reveal of the THE Asia University Rankings 2023, which uses the latest data to identify the continent’s best-performing institutions. The summit will also host the THE Awards Asia 2023 ceremony. The awards, known as the Oscars of Higher Education, are a major international platform celebrating outstanding leadership and institutional performance.
During the networking lunch breaks on the first two days of the Summit, the participating universities will share their institutional stories in 10-minute presentations. This is a unique opportunity for delegates to find out about those universities and their research capabilities, as well as to have open, informal discussions about possible future collaborations and partnerships.
The summit includes a half-day tour to The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen (CUHK-Shenzhen). The tour will be hosted by President of CUHK-Shenzhen, Professor Xu Yangsheng, and will provide the delegates an opportunity to meet with senior representatives and experience the campus first-hand. This unique tour will offer delegates a rare perspective on the development of cross-border collaborative education in China, and will be a platform to develop new partnerships in the Greater Bay Area, mainland China and beyond.
